The State of UK AI Adoption 2026

Downloads | UK AI adoption research

755 UK mid-market leaders on what separates the companies that can prove AI pays from the ones that cannot.

Half of the 755 UK mid-market business leaders surveyed can show a measurable return on AI. Only 14 per cent have it running across three or more functions with a number behind it.

We looked for what separates them and expected tooling, talent or data. It is governance. Companies with no governance report 22 per cent measurable ROI, against 85 per cent for the most mature, on much the same tools.

A written AI policy that nobody follows is not a safe halfway point. In HR, companies with a policy on paper report 16 per cent measurable ROI. Companies with no policy at all report 33.

Inside the report:

  • Why 79 per cent of leaders surveyed have already had an AI failure, and which kind of failure actually stalls a programme
  • The governance gap in full, from no policy through to embedded practice
  • Capability as the second lever, and what changes when the leader uses AI daily
  • Where every function stands, from the strongest starting point to the weakest
  • The four moves that separate the companies that scaled
  • Full methodology and the complete data appendix

Fielded January to March 2026 with our research partner Executive Summary, the team behind Adobe’s annual Digital Trends Survey. 755 UK mid-market business leaders in organisations turning over £20m to £500m.
