AI marketing automation: from a whiteboard sketch to a campaign

Downloads | AI case studies

AI marketing automation works fastest when customer data sits in one place and the marketer stays in control. Alex Croker, Senior Solutions Consultant at Imagino, showed this in a live demo at aiblLIVE London 2026.

He photographed a whiteboard plan and let Imagino’s AI build a re-engagement campaign on live customer data. He approved, edited and corrected it at each step. Here is how it worked.

The demo in numbers

  • Three weeks was how long a brief took to become a build when Croker started his career, 15 years ago.
  • Three minutes was the target for the same job in the demo.
  • Four steps in the AI-built campaign: an email, two SMS reminders and an offer email.

All figures as stated on stage by Alex Croker.

Why does AI marketing automation depend on unified data?

Because AI can only act on data it can reach. Croker says many teams build audiences in one tool and campaigns in another, joined up by IT tickets and stale exports. When he worked on AI content, personalisation failed because marketers did not have the data. Imagino combines a CDP with campaign activation on live data.

AI is the reason that we’ll be able to do this faster. But it’s not a silver bullet.

Alex Croker, Senior Solutions Consultant, Imagino

How did the AI turn a whiteboard into a campaign?

It read the handwriting and played the plan back first. After the AI spotted at-risk, inactive customers in the live data, Croker uploaded a photo of a whiteboard plan. The AI pulled out the audience, steps and messaging ideas. Croker removed an A/B test and a paid ad step, then the AI built the campaign.

What happens when the plan asks for something impossible?

The AI should notice and suggest another route. The whiteboard plan included a push notification, but the demo system had no app. Imagino flagged that it could not send a push and offered email or SMS instead. Croker chose SMS, and the AI built the rest of the four-step campaign with first-draft content.

How do marketers keep control of AI-built campaigns?

By checking every rule and every message. In the demo, the AI had fixed the audience’s 30-day engagement window to one date. Croker changed it to a rolling window for an always-on campaign. He also treats AI-written customer copy as a first draft that people must review.

This is editable. This is not a fixed black box of AI decisioning.

Alex Croker, Senior Solutions Consultant, Imagino

Key takeaways

  • Unify the data first. AI cannot personalise what marketers cannot reach.
  • Demand a playback step. The AI should confirm the plan before it builds.
  • Open every segment rule. A fixed date that should roll is easy to miss.
  • Review the copy. AI content is a first draft for your brand team.

What’s in the full case study

If your campaigns still wait weeks for data and IT, this demo shows a different way to work. The full PDF goes deeper than this page, in Croker’s own words.

  • The demo, step by step, from a simple engagement question to a built campaign.
  • How the AI handled a channel it could not use, and what it suggested instead.
  • Where marketers stayed in control: playback, segment rules and copy review.
  • Five actions to take back to your own organisation.

For CMOs, CRM leads and marketing operations teams planning AI in their campaigns. Five pages, about a seven-minute read.
